Eldrin’s quiet, but that useually means the gears are turning fast. He won’t say it, but he’s chasing something buried deep in that journal. And if the Ashbreathers don’t kill him first, he might actually find it.

There’s a passage he flagged last night. Before we were attacked in the trenches and the journal you found was lost.

It was something about the “flames that remember.” I think it’s referencing the stone inscriptions we’ve seen near where the Ashcrafters scribe.

They etch into tablets with molten lava. Literally carve their rites while the stone is still hot enough to melt. I’ve only seen it once from afar. The bowls they use glow like dragon’s blood. Whatever that lave touches, it holds the shape forever. Eldrin thinks it’s more than just writing. It may be a ritual binder. Like their version of magical ink.

I need samples. Three from vials they’re using to freshly scribe in stone should do the trick. Careful though the Ashbreathers are possessive.
