The sample you brought back have changed everything.
Eldrin believes the Ashbreathers are imprinting memory and command into their castes. Not just though ritual, but through what they carry, wear… wield. That would explain the journal’s next notion: “The metal that binds the mind to flame.
He suspects it refers to the alloy used in the ceremonial weapons of the priest caste. Their maces specifically. If he’s right, the material might store more than strength. it might resonate with their castes. Maybe even their hierarchy.
We need a sample. The problem? It’s not mined or forged in any way we understand. The priests don’t just carry it… they’re bonded to it. You’ll need to claim it directly from their dead hands. It won’t be easy. They don’t go down quietly, and they don’t travel alone.
If you can recover one, bring it straight back. We’ll compare it to the glyph-lava. Maybe this is how they shape more than just stone.

[She’s careful not to touch the runes burned into the shaft.]
This alloy isn’t natural. It doesn’t conduct heat… it remembers it. This may be what the journal calls the “spine of flame.” If so, we’ll need it for the next piece.
I appreciate everything you’ve done for us.
Give Eldrin some time. He’ll warm to you. I primise. He’s battling an injury that didn’t just hurt his pride. He can barely move. Not to mention…
… the journal wasn’t the only thing we lost when we were attacked in the trenches.
