My mining is topped at 110 and I have NEVER gotten a raw gem of any type. Exactly where are these "raw" gems and why do all my spells depend on them?

I truly don't know how your mining can be 110 and you have never seen any of these. I'm level 19, which is like a mining skill of 57 or something around there, and I have a bank full of all types of gems. What did you do, level straight to 40 and then mine 110 nodes to get the skill to 110 and then stopped? lol. Seems fishy.
